Learn the principles before the lab. The lab assumes you know the eight service-orientation principles and the difference between REST and SOAP well enough to apply them without looking them up.
Study patterns in pairs. Many lab scenarios make you choose between similar patterns, for example service façade vs. legacy wrapper, or orchestration vs. event-driven messaging.
Practice reading case studies. Build the habit of finding the constraint first (regulation, performance, legacy system) and then picking a pattern that fits it.
